I’m wondering what will be the minimum workable storage system for prores 444. Will a RAID 0 unit like a Caldigit VR or G-Raid3 be sufficient or will one need a HDElement (or similar)? I know one of the other threads says that prores 4444 is 330 Mb/s while regular prores is 147.

    Thanks!

ProRes 4444 (excluding alpha) at 1080/24P is about 33 MB/sec. At 1080/60i it is about 41MB/sec.

ProRes 422 at 1080/24P is about 22MB/sec. At 1080/60i it is about 27MB/sec.

So there is a higher data rate, but it’s really not very significant. Most standard 7200 rpm drives would run it fine. Many of those drives run between 80-120MB/sec now days.

I would suggest a RAID like you suggest for multiple streams and backup protection.

I am always amazed how Russell gets confirmation of this info quicker than I do. Yes, 41Mb/sec, and yes, any internal SATA drive will do for bare bones work.

It always amazes me how nerdy I get when people start talking data rates! I’m not sure it’s healthy.
