Hey everyone.. i was curious what everyone might suggest as a good storage setup on a dell m4600 i’m spec’ing out? I’m going to be buying an external 4tb usb 3.0 drive, so i figure that will be storage… but what would everyone recommend as storage on the actual laptop, knowing that i’m primarily going to be using it for cs6 applications, especially premiere pro cs6?

    My options are:

Primary Storage (128gb SSD minicard, 256 SSD, 512 SSD, 750gb HHD)

Secondary Storage (128gb SSD, 256 SSD, 512 SSD, 750gb HHD)

$ is an issue so the 512 SSD’s are a little out of the question. What would everyone recommend?

My recommendation is the traditional 750gig HD as your primary drive because, although the trade off is boot speed, you do want some general storage space once you have apps installed.

I’d then suggest the 128 or 256 SSD dedicated for CS applications temp/scratch folders, especially AE’s global cache.

USB3 isn’t my favorite interface. Make sure you fiddle around in the BIOS settings as there are a few transfer modes for USB3. If this is set incorrectly for your use, you’ll find any external USB3 drive very sluggish for video.

hi angelo, thanks for the reply.

i think the m4600 can only be configured so that if you have a 2nd drive, you can ONLY have the mSATA 128 SSD as your primary… thats all they offer. So that only allows for the OS & CS6 on the SSD i believe.

Does it work to have the mSATA 128SSD as the OS & CS6 drive, then another 128SSD as the scratch disk, and then using the external usb 3.0 hhd as storage for media?

or how about the mSATA 128SSD for OS & CS6, then just having the 750gb hhd for storage and scratch disk?

what do you feel is most important to have the ssd dedicated for… the scratch disk?

I recommend getting the mSATA SSD. The other drive will depend on your typical usage. The 512GB SSD offers the best tradeoff between speed and capacity, but as you mentioned it is fairly expensive. Between the 256GB SSD and 750GB HDD:

    – If you will use the computer for live video capture, the SSD will support higher frame rates and resolutions. When the SSD gets full you can transfer the files to an external drive (about twenty minutes per 100GB).
    – If you travel frequently the 750GB HDD is probably a better choice. Connecting an external drive while on the go is a pain.

A few other things to consider:

    – If the mSATA SSD is your primary drive, it does not take much effort to install a secondary drive yourself. SSDs and HDDs are usually less expensive from a retailer than pre-installed.
    – If you already have an external DVD/BD drive, or don’t plan to use the internal drive much, consider replacing the optical drive with a hard drive caddy. That way you can have the mSATA SSD, 256GB SSD, and 750GB HDD all in one. A caddy is relatively inexpensive, but the installation process is a bit more involved and might void your warranty.
    – Take a look at the systems available through Dell Outlet, and check the @DellOutlet Twitter page for additional discounts.
