Quick question on storage, whats the preferred level of RAID protection? We’re trying to piece together a Final Cut system and looking at the different options but i’m just a tad confused as to what each level does. It would have to handle uncompressed HD footage and allow for protection of data.

[Brandon Sesenton] “whats the preferred level of RAID protection”

Raid 5. Speed and data protection. HARDWARE Raid preferred. But this isn’t a cheap option. RAID 0 is speed, but NO protection, and Raid 1 is protection, but slow.

MaxxDigital EVO series or Caldigit HD Pro or HD One.

You probably want RAID-5. That would allow a single disk to fail in your RAID without losing data, with good speed. Other popular options are RAID-0, which is the fastest but has no protection (any disk fails and you’re data is lost), and RAID-1 (mirrored) which is the safest but slowest.

Not all RAID-5 is created equal, though. Different drives and manufactures give you vastly different speeds. And, you probably want a HARDWARE (rather than software) based RAID. Lots of good options listed here from Cow advertisers!

What about Maxx Digital? Someone recommended their EVO 4 HD line.

Maxx Digital uses SATA host controllers from ATTO and Areca – both hardware raid controllers. You must understand that there are many teriffic drive companies out there, but you will see that some offer RAID 5 products that are “so much cheaper” than the other guys. There is a reason for that. When you look at products that use software RAID instead of dedicated hardware raid, you have inferior protection and performance. Creative Cow has the best advertisers showing the best products, but even these companies offer different product lines. It’s your job to do your homework, and find a company that uses ATTO or Areca RAID 5 host controllers – compare prices, and make your own decision. Low price means nothing when all of your media disappears.

    Amen to that.

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m just starting to really break into this and learn as I go so i’m trying to get input from alot of different experienced people in the field. What’s the difference between a software and hardware RAID?
