    Hi Folks,

I’m prepping a documentary that we are shooting abroad in some unpredictable and possibly rugged locations.

We’re shooting on a couple Sony XDCAM EX 1 cams. The production has purchased Seagate FreeAgent Desk (1TB) drives for offloading and storing our footage in the field.

Has anyone had any experience with these drives (in particular with XDCAM EX 1)? Were they reliable?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Best,
    -Hoku

Unpredictable rugged and hard drive. That sounds like a bad combination to me.

There are portable HD systems that are meant to handle more extreme weather and shock.
I wouldn’t describe this test as definitive but this is what a hard drive needs to do to survive. Run over by a truck is a pretty good testament to durability.

Thanks for the advice and the links! I’ll research more on those drives.

Also, I learned that in addition to the Seagate FreeAgent Desk (1 TB), the production has also, thus far, purchased the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop (1 TB) hard drive.

If anyone has any experience with either of these drives I’d love to hear how you felt the drive performed, how reliable it was and any other thoughts you may have on it.

    Thanks!

I have heard there have been power supply failures with those units.
Two people in one of my users groups reported this.
