This might be the wrong forum, but I thought I’d give it a shot…

I’m trying to upgrade my “old” PowerMac G5 to better handle HDV footage in FCP. I’ve added 4gb of RAM, and now I want to exchange my Firewire 800 external drive with an internal SATA drive.

I’ve heard about some trouble with certain Western Digital and Seagate drives installed on PPC Macs, and I want to make sure I get the right drive. I’m looking for about 1TB of storage. Does anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance…

A new drive won’t help you. HDV uses a very tiny amount of bandwidth. You could edit it off your system disk if you had to. The only thing that will help you is a new CPU – and you can’t upgrade a CPU in a G5, so you’d have to get a new computer.

Maybe try changing your workflow to using ProRes instead of HDV.

As for the HD, generally any SATA disk will work but there are rare exceptions. You should call Western Digital and ask if you want to be certain.
