Storage for 15TB in one go
Planning a 17 episode docudrama with an estimated need of abot 12-15 TB storage for raw material. Footage is XDCAM HD422. Any good ideas for low cost storage solutions that can work for this purpose, apart from xsan and the likes? Been looking into things like Drobo etc., but not sure about performance.
The storage does not have to be redundant and does not need speed for access from more than one editing suite at a time.
Cutting on Mac Pros, so unfortunately all Thunderbolt devices are not an option either.

Yes, there is. We have physical copies of all the material elsewhere, on several locations.

FW800 is. fine for XDCam or even ProRes422. Perhaps two Lacie 8 terrabyte drives might do the trick. MacPros have a couple of FW800 ports so you don’t need to daisy chain.
Sometimes one big drive will deliver less performance than two and if a drive fails, you only have to restore half as much media. Also drive performance suffers when drives get over 80-90% full so have some spare capacity.

Sounds like a G-Tech G-Speed is right up your alley. I would suggest an ES or an ES Pro, both of which require a PCI card. Double the speed compared with a firewire drive. Pick RAID-0, or RAID-5 with a 25% penalty on total size for the redundancy.

I’ve been using G-Speed es raids (RAID5) for a few years with no issues. You can configure a single 4-drive RAID using 4Tb drives or use more than one at RAID5 for safety.

Does the same job as the G-Tech ES ones, and have USB 3.0 as well as FW800-ports.
