  • Stopping short of video end when rendering

Posted by Michael O’connor on December 28, 2011 at 6:01 pm

I use Sony Vegas 7 and have a 20 minute trade show video completed. For some reason when I render it, the finished avi video stops with about 2 minutes left. I have rendered it several times, and it always stops in the same place. I have highlighted the entire veg project before rendering, but each time it leaves off the last two minutes or so in the completed avi file. I don’t see anything in the timeline that would tell the video to end. Ideas? Thanks.

My guess is that the drive you’re rendering to is formatted as FAT-32.
This needs to be changed to NTFS format to overcome the file size limit.

I’m guessing what you are talking about is different from actual hard drive space available? I do have about 25 gigs on the drive which should be more than enough. Could you give me an idea of where in the settings I would go to make the changes you suggest? Thanks for the help

I just finished rendering the veg file again and noticed on the monitor it appeared to render everything to the end, yet when I opened the file and played it, once again it stopped with about two minutes to go so you may be right. Since I am a bit technically challenged 🙂 I would appreciate some guideance on making the changes. Thanks.

How large was the rendered file?
What format did you use (NTSC DV-AVI or something else)?
Are you rendering to your system drive or a different one?

Rendered as Template NTSC DV Type VIDEO FOR WINDOWS AVI
and custom menu for video set to BEST final size 4gb
and it is located on an external drive
Thanks for the help. Let me know if I can tell you more.

Most (but not all) external drives come formatted as NTFS but it’s always good to confirm that.
Open My Computer, right-click the drive and select Properties.
This is what I see with XP Pro.

Thanks Mike I appreciate the help. I got it converted so I am hoping it will work now…it was fat32.

Mike I just rendered it after converting the fat32 to ntfs and it did the same thing. The final size of the avi video is showing 4188397kb 3.99 gb
it always stops in the same place.
I could try rendering to a different drive?? Suggestions

Michael, I just loaded up an old project, trimmed it to exactly 20 minutes, rendered it as NTSC DV-AVI and got a file size of 4.24 GB (4,560,269,312 bytes).
All I can think of is that something (image, video?) near the end is stopping the render from going any further but for the life of me I can’t think of what that could be.

Good news Mike. I tried rendering to a different external drive and it worked fine!! Not sure why the other one wouldn’t but we’re good to go and thanks so much for your help.
