How can I stop that annoying sound that happens everytime I boot my MacBook Pro? I know the system is booting by just seeing the screen. I do not need a sound announcing to everyone in the office or coffee shop that I am booting. System prefs does not seem to affect it.

    Thanx,
    Gary

This complaint has been registered since the original Mac 🙂
It’s supposed to be reassuring, not annoying. Also, if other sounds (chimes of death) immediately follow the startup sound, you’ll know something is very, very wrong.
If you must mute your MBP, a freeware Pref Pane called, oddly, “Startup Sound” is available.
It basically turns down the master volume control to a user-preferred level at shutdown, and restores it to its previous level following startup. The Intel version is a Beta release; I’ve been using the PPC version for a long time.
    Check Arcana Research site

Gary if you don’t like it then just put the computer to sleep and wake it from sleep when you need it.

I would not no anything to hack the system like the other poster suggested, it is there for a reason.
