Activity Forums Avid Media Composer Stop Motion Effect ?

  • Stop Motion Effect ?

My 11 year old likes takes my digital camera and takes a whole bunch of pictures of his Halo action figures; he moves them a little then takes a picture and repeats the process (stop animation, then holds down the ‘forward: button on my camera and it makes a pretty cool “movie”.

Well he just discovered there is a contest on the Halo website to make a short clip with your action figures-something he does all the time.

So, naturally he wants my help. He has all the pictures-I just need to import them into Avid MC , lay down some music-add some VO’s or
    something…

My problem is…there’s a LOT of photos and I need to shorten he length of all of them on the timeline to maybe 2 seconds to get the stop motion effect. I don’t want to have to set IN and OUT points for each individual clip-that would take forever. Is there a “one shot” way to set all of the clips on the timeline to play the same length of time?

Also, any ideas on how to make it “cooler” would be welcome. I have After effects CS4 too…

Sounds like a really fun project to work with your son on. In your settings you should be able to change the default still duration and then import them all at the desired length. Do a test with 10 stills or so to see if it plays right in your sequence before importing the whole batch. Good luck and have fun.

In Avid, you can select all the pictures at once if they have a number sequence, open up the options and check the autodetect seq and change the still duration to 1, 2 seconds.

Years ago I had to do something similiar, brough the files into avid using and then used a time effect to speed it up quite a bit as 1 second is just way too long for stop motion.

If you have a seq files. I would probably bring them into AE(also can do make them into one file during import) and work with it in there. Probably turn on frame blending. Just a little easier to work with photos in AE.

If the stills have consecutive numbers you can import them as a single clip by checking the ‘auto detect sequentially numbered files’ in the import dialogue box.

Each still will make up one frame of the imported clip.

If you want to slow the clip down add a motion effect – for example a 50percent playback rate will make each still last for 2 frames and so on. This might be easier than working with individual clips for each still, and you could even use the timeworn function to speed up and slow down as needed.

Thanks! AE sounds easier if I can make them into one file from the get go.

Can I also set the length of each photo before I Import them into AE/Make them into One file?

    Umm..
Can you walk me through it-I’ve never worked with photos in AE, plus I’m going to let my son “help” so he can feel like he “made” it too

    I’ll Start…
    1. I have a sequence of jpgs numbered 1- whatever.
    2. I open up AE

    and…
