  • Stop AFX seraching for movie data in by-ref files?

Posted by Andy Taplin on July 16, 2008 at 9:56 am

    Hi All

Before I learnt that by-ref files are a pain in the backside I used them all the time. I now sometimes need to open old projects to make a couple of changes, but the projects takes forever to open as AFX is searching for the movie data in the by-ref files.

Is there anyway to stop this and just open the project with unlinked media if necessary?

    Thanks

I’ve run into this before I think. What I would recommend instead of trying to figure out why your ref movie doesn’t work. Save the reference movie as a self contained file. I find in general if I have a problem with a file, often times re-saving or re-exporting does the trick.

I’m only half the thing I say I am, the other half are me.

    Thanks

I do now export as self-cons but this is an old project and it’s not easy to go back and re-export.

I’ve found the best way to open these old projects is open them with the drives off (which stops AFX hunting for the movie data) and then deleting everything I don’t need to make the changes, so there are only a few files for AFX to load when I switch the drives on.

[Dave LaRonde] “That’s the way to do it. I hope you also save the revised project under a new name. You know, just in case….”

Oh yes – save the project using new names all the time – better to have too many than not enough!
