Stock movie cataloging
Hopefully this is the right place to ask… I catalog and create a database of a large amount of stock movies I use from time to time (generic movies from IStock, smoke elements etc.) using an old program called Movie Gallery. I have yet to find an equal to this program and wonder if anyone out there uses a program for this purpose on Mac.
IMedia Pro is close but what it lacks is the ability to pick which frame is displayed as a thumbnail. Pretty important for this. MG’s shortfall is that it doesn’t give you the path of where the movie is on your hard drive. I right click and it can reveal it allowing me to use it, but if I move the database to another computer all links are broken.
Would love to hear alternatives.

Take a serious look at Adobe Bridge. I use it to keep track of upwards of 100,000 assets, from clips and projects to music and scripts. I can put my hands on an asset in seconds. It has custom metadata capabilities (with file which will accept metadata), and extremely powerful search capabilities.

Sheesh I forgot all about Bridge. Looking through it, it could work but is there a way to set the poster frame for the thumbnail? Some of them show up black or a part of the video that isn’t representative of the content.

I don’t see the option for setting the thumbnail frame in any of the Bridge documentation. It looks as if this might need a feature request.

Joseph, Bridge doesn’t seem to have been updated in a bit. Do you think it’s on its way out? Also, is there a way to get your data out of Bridge and into another asset management program such as CatDV?

One of the biggest updates for me in Bridge was not too long ago: it established Bridge as its’ own external installer, so that facilities which might need file management capabilities (or browsing) could install Bridge separately from the rest of the suite. I have a separate workstation on which I do my Adobe suite work, but my desktop machine has a separate install of Bridge so that when I need a file to send to a client, I can browse for it independently of the suite install. Works great!
I don’t think Bridge is going anywhere anytime soon, but what do I know? Just a guess…
The metadata which you see in Bridge is XMP, an ISO standard for metadata, so I would assume that it’s viewable in any software which will access metadata. Here’s way more info than you probably want to know, but I find it useful:

Thanks for the info Joseph. Oddly enough I’d been looking for something to catalog my stock elements too as just doing it via the Finder wasn’t cutting it any more.
