Stock Footage workflow problem
So here is the deal: I am working on a branding project that is comprised completely of stock footage. So we were downloading a bunch of clips from various sites which were all various frame rates and compression types. I am working on a system with a black magic card and saw that there was an easy setup called “Black Magic NTSC-JPEG”, and I thought that is sounded great to convert all of the different footage through compressor to PhotoJPEG 720×486 to match this setting. I thought this would be ideal for our purposes. Unfortunately it turns out that having gone this route I have sacrificed almost all real time ability in fcp. I have to render anything I do like fades, or speed changes, or even slight resizes. It totally stinks, but at this point since there is so much media and several editors working with the same pool of footage I don’t want to use media manager to convert everything once again to something like DV. Why is this an option for an easy setup if it is such a crappy workflow? Is there anything I can do to get some more real time functionality out of fcp using this format or am I just screwed?

That isn’t a real time format, and it never was. It was at one point a finishing solution. Capture at offline RT for the offline edit, then Photo JPEG 75% for online resolution. But that is an OLD workflow, and yes, nothing is in real time. Better solutions are DV, DV50, even uncompressed 8-bit, although DV50 takes up less space.
Count it as lesson learned and to not do that again.

Bummer. But that is what I figured. The worst part about this whole thing is that I think this is the second time I’ve done something just like this. I knew that it wasn’t a real time format, but I guess I was too excited when I saw it as an easy setup and even tested a clip to make sure it would work…obviously not enough testing (I guess I just threw it in a timeline, saw that I didn’t have to render, and figured it was going to be cool). Stupid, stupid, stupid.
