Stock footage in an HDV project
Hi all. Here’s another HD question. Our 30 minute project will be edited using footage mostly shot on JVC’s GY-DH100U. We’re planning on doing all capturing on our G5 using the Kona Pcie Card and a JVC Pro HD video tape recorder and a Huge 2.5 TB 4GB Dual Channel Fibre Rackmount. We’ll need to be producing SD screening copies every couple of days for the client on DVD and Beta. I’m concerned with the nearly 15% of the show that will be coming in from stock footage. Mostly on DVCam tapes and oftentimes at fairly poor image quality. My hope was to edit entirely in the 23.98 DV codec to facilitate quick rendering times and the large amount of stock footage. So, here are the questions I’m struggling with…
1) Assuming that I upconvert the project to DVCPro HD at the end what is the best way to deal with this stock footage?
2) How will media manager deal with footage that was shot or recorded in standard NTSC DV?
3) Is it best to simply avoid the HDV environment in FCP if possible? There seems to be some controversy on this topic and I’m wondering if it isn’t best to dub our HDV footage to HD before even beginning this project.
Sorry for the convoluted posting. Any advice on the issue of stock footage and/or HDV is very very much appreciated. Thanks!
