I’m looking to purchase and import a 3-D stock image of a dice (die for purists) into After Effects and I’m wondering what type of files, specifically what extension, can be imported and manipulated in 3-D. If anyone has a good suggestion for a site I’d be interested as well. Thanks!

You mean a stock 3D mesh or model? Sorry, the only way to import those is through the Zaxwerks Invigorator plugin.

Natively, AE only imports 2D videos, raster images, vector images and audio, as well as some scene data and camera data from some 3D apps. No 3D meshes or models. Natively. Need Invig.

So then you have to buy Zaxworks Invigorator and then you can purchase a 3D image and import it and manipulate it in AE?

You can on a limited basis. I’d make sure you can do what you want in zax before you spend any moolahlah.

    Hi Airkogan,

Yes. You have to buy Invigorator to be able to import a 3D object. For a dice you don’t need to buy the model though, as you could easily create a dice with Invigorator itself. To learn more about Invigorator visit the Zaxwerks site.
I will create a simple example for you right now using Invigorator. You would need to download a demo of Invigorator to open the project though.

    Salut.

Serge – as usual, you silence the naysayers by simply providing a beautiful working model, for free… You are awesome.

Still, as you are probably aware, one important feature of a true 3D model is a simple beveling and rounding of the edges. I imaginge this would be much harder to achieve in AE… I’m afraid to say “impossible” since the next thing we’ll get is another link to a .aep from nyc-visual 🙂

Of course it all depends on the intended application and required look, for many purposes your dice would be perfect and much easier to manipulate than a 3D model.

    Hey Alon,

You could round the edges of your square/ai file to get a better dice. I created this one too quickly and didn’t do that. Of course, a 3D program would in this case give you a complete bevel where Invigorator would only bevel the sides not the front or back face. However, you barely notice that when you animate your object.

Here is how it could look:

Thanks for the kind words btw:-)

Heh. Silly me, I didn’t open your .aep when I made my comment, and I assumed you made the cube just using flat layers positioned in 3D space (I guess the reflections should have clued me on). That would have made the bevels almost impossible to make, I guess.

Sometimes the naysayers know what they’re talking about. Yes? 🙂

But Serge is righteous in his generosity, nevertheless.

Thanks for all your help, guys. If I recall, doesn’t After Effects come with Zax or a free coupon or something? I’ve got to go through my old stuff.
