  • Still having issues with HDV workflow with Kona-2

Sorry for the somewhat similiar double post from the AJA forum but under deadline and still not grasping the workflow.

We shot a Sony Z1U at 1080i/50i for the 25 frame rate…but, the project has to be dubbed out ntsc SD.

FCPHD, G5, sata raid, Kona-2 w/kbox, AJA analog to digital HD converter (HD10a), nattress standards converter.

What we would like to for this :30 spot:
    – capture directly to a dvcpro100 hd codec because our 4-drive sata raid isn’t fast enough for uncompressed hd.
    – edit a 1080i/50i timeline.
    – render to disk the finished 1080i, then bring it in to a 1080i/60i timeline and apply the standards converter.
    – Use Kona-2 to downconvert our SD dub.

Using the camera as the source… should we use the firewire or the analong outs and the converter to capture with?
What FCP easy setups should be used in the above work-flow?
What Kona-2 control panel setting for i/o work best?

    Thanks so much!

Well, if you want to capture to the DVCPROHD codec, you’ll have to use the machine and a converter. Firewire is HDV only. To be honest, using the converter will be much better quality and less work for the computer, so I’d use it all of the time if I had one to use. Everything else you stated will work. it may take some time to render but it should work just fine. You might want to check with Graeme on the proper settings for his standard converter plugin to get the right look but other than that you have the right idea.
