stereoscopic – parallel off axis in AE????
Posted by Doug Nash on June 25, 2010 at 5:58 pmHey all,
If I create my L & R channels in Cinema 4D, with the Parallel Off Axis method, my two cameras will make use of the “film offset X” capability. However, when I import those cameras into AE, they’re simply parallel, without the necessary film offset. This seems like a CRITICAL problem!!!
How can this be resolved or worked around, please.
Thanks.

I don’t have an answer for this question, but the COW also has Cinema 4D and Stereoscopic 3D forums; perhaps someone there would have some direct experience.

June 28, 2010 at 5:23 pmThanks. I’ve been posting, at length, on both C4D Cafe & CG Talk about the 3D end of things. I’m fairly squared away there, but the AfterEffects workflow is where I need additional input. I figured this would be good, in that it’s specifically AE, but I’ll start a thread over in the stereoscopic forum, as well.

I’ve done a couple tests in stereo with After Effects (mainly using Chris Keller’s outstanding stereoscopic scripts), but without native stereo support in the application, I’ve found the whole process a bit cumbersome. I’ve just started evaluating Nuke specifically for its native stereoscopic support, but of course there’s a substantial learning curve.
Doug, would you mind posting back here when you find a solution? I’d be very interested in seeing how you resolve this in AE.

June 28, 2010 at 9:14 pmThanks, Walter. I’ll report back whatever salient information I may glean.
I have also considered Nuke, but the fact that it really isn’t a suitable design program really kills it for me. Plus, they’re still playing games with pricing and “maintenance contracts”. I thought that died with Silicone Graphics years ago…
