  • Stereo vs Dual Mono preference

Posted by Bruce Wittman on May 1, 2013 at 3:38 pm

    Hey Cowboys and Cowgirls,

Don’t know if there is a preference setting for this. All my work involves dual mono audio recording. Channel one may be a lavalier mic and Channel two may be a shotgun mic. Every time I add a clip on the timeline, I have to go to the audio panel and change the setting from stereo to dual mono, so I can select the one channel I want to use.

Any way to make the default audio setting be “dual mono” instead of “stereo”?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Select all of your video clips in the Event.

Change the audio from Stereo to Dual mono in the inspector.

Every time you add a clip to the timeline, it will now be dual mono.

Can also have it auto-detect on import, but I’ve had mixed results.

    Ditto

    It’s not reliable.

I do the workaround all the time. But there really should be a preference item for it so you don’t have to waste time changing them. If you have an event with a lot of clips it actually takes awhile.

The preference should allow different settings for clips from camera, imported clips, and clips from iTunes.

This was a good article to find!

I’ve been doing lots of work with one track of audio. I always deselect the second mono track which is always empty. Do I need to do that? Would there be a change if I didn’t?

Mono tracks are panned center, so if you’ve got a silent track it shouldn’t have any effect.
