My camcorder is the HDR-CX500V. This camera records in 5.1 sound. I recently completed a project of my daughters hockey highlights. When I worked with the HD version, it was set as 5.1. I ended up changing a lot of the sound envelopes and levels with the voices and music etc. It was quite labor intensive to do this with the 5.1 sound. When I changed the properties to SD to do a version for DVD for the girls, I ended up changing to stereo. I noticed that the sound levels in doing this were different. I had to go in a change many of the envelopes/levels which again was quite labor intensive. It would have been easier if the sound was set to stereo originally on the time line. So, I have a couple of questions.

    – This camcorder is not that high of an end unit yet it records 5.1 sound through a little square on the top of the unit. I don’t believe that this 5.1 would be of that high of a quality. Is this just a gimmick? Most of the higher end camcorders that I have looked at just record in stereo

    – Should I get an external sound mic attachment which would have better quality but then be only stereo?

I think you will find that “consumer camcoder” and “gimmick” go hand-in-hand. Yes, it’s a gimmick and I wouldn’t use it. It’s the first thing in turned off on my Sony CX-12.

Yes, an external mic will always improve the audio quality. If your camera has a mini-jack input for a microphone I highly recommend getting the RØDE VideoMic. It is the best mic for the money and was purposely designed for consumer camcorders.

    Mark,

This is off the topic, I know. Your name came up when I did a search for the ADVC-300 A/D Converter. I was curious if you ever got one. I need one to capture a few HI-8 tapes for a documentary for a museum.

    You can email me at
m.hayes@yahoo.com if yo have any info.

I was curious if you ever picked up a used one.

    Thanks.

    Mark

I own an ADVC-300 A/D Converter. Did you have a question about it? (You might want to start a new thread so that others who have it will reply too)
