Figured I’d start out with this one on the Basics forum…

I just cannot wrap my head around the combination of the sequence audio tracks, the “Audio Outputs” tab in the sequence setting, and the “Audio Settings” section of the “General” tab of the Sequence Settings window.

Why is this so complicated? With Media 100 I would link and unlink a stereo track, mute one track and hear the other, pan them independently of each other, etc.

My main issue is that when I pull a stereo track into a sequence and mute the top track (A1, usually), I can’t hear the other track! I see the levels playing, but there is no sound. If I mute the bottom track, I CAN hear the top one.

If I manually set the pan of the bottom track in the Audio Mixer to something other than “1,” which it is set at by default, then I can slowly begin to hear it. The top track is set to -1 by default. But isn’t that the way a stereo pair should be, one panned all the way to left, the other all the way to the right? Why can’t I hear the one panned to the right independently of the left?

My sequence is set up as “Channel Grouped” (by default) and the Audio Outputs are set to set to Stereo in the “Audio Outputs” tab.

    Am I missing something?

You don’t mention how you are monitoring, but if you are using the build in speakers or the headphone jack try:

    Open System Preferences.

Choose Sound – far right second row.

Hit the Output tab. In the middle.

Confirm that the Balance is set to the middle.

If you aren’t monitoring the built in speakers or the headphone jack, check the balance or pan settings of you monitors.

Getting my head around using audio in FCP took some doing. The manual, in this case, worked wonders for me. Especially exploring the

    Modify > Audio menu

    and

    Modify > Link

    and

    Modify > Stereo Pair

There is a lot to know about how the audio is controlled and output, but stick with it and you will get it.

    Best,

    Tom M
