Stephen Smith’s “Painting with Apple Motion” Fails In 2 Layers
I’ve just tried his tutorial and it works great until I duplicate the layer with the pen stroke and ink expand.mov.
When I do, the Duplicate layer works just like the Original layer did, but the Original layer now doesn’t work like it did just before I duplicated it. The Original layer doesn’t really have that write-on from left to right feel anymore, the ink expand shape kinda just dissolves on in a few frames where I had drawn the entire stroke instead of a more writing on left to right across the length of the stroke as now Layer Duplicate still does.
When I delete Duplicate layer, Original layer still doesn’t return to its original behavior prior to duplication. BTW: There are no other layers.1. Why?
2. Other alternate suggestions? I’m trying to build a roiling smoke full background for about 30 seconds or so. I thought I could just duplicate a half-dozen or so of these effects and place them around the screen to get something close.

Jeff, thanks for watching my tutorial. I tried to duplicate your problem and can’t. I duplicated the stroke 3 times and each one looks the same to me. See the attached video.
Can you upload your project file somewhere?

Trash prefs? I dunno.

The project file downloaded but did not open up. Have you ever used YouSendIt?

That worked, thanks Jeff.
I think you found a bug.
I duplicated the top group and moved it to the left and the craziest thing happened. Every thing returned back to normal. Even if I disable the group I just created everything writes on. I did a Save As on the project and closed it out, and then re-opened it and it still works like it should. I have no idea as to why the lines stopped animating on you. Duplicate the top group and move it to the left of the timeline and see if you get the same results. If you don’t want the group then just hide it. Here is a movie of the final results.
