starting a new Business with Premiere
Posted by Paul Corey on November 4, 2006 at 9:44 pmHi,
I was thinking of getting Adobe Production studio with the black magic-design Multibridge Extreme and renting it out to other video editors. I have room for it and I was wounding if Adobe would be good for that or would I get more editors look for Avid or FCP. I use Adobe Premiere Pro for my self. But the other studio would be to rent and maybe make money. I am not full time pro editor. I work in video part time editing weddings so I would not need a system at that level.Paul

November 4, 2006 at 11:15 pmInteresting question, Paul. You might also take it to the Business forum.
But my experience has been that renting rooms works best when you’re offering gear that’s too expensive for most people to buy. Old school Avids, Flame/Flint/Smoke, DaVinci color rooms, etc. — but all are going away. Pretty much anyone can afford even a high-end Avid these days, a ton of people have switched to After Effects for the highest-end compositing, and there a bunch of great color correction tools, including the ones in Premiere.
Your last sentence is the most revealing: “I work in video part time editing weddings so I would not need a system at that level.”
I’ve met dozens, maybe even hundreds of full-time professional event videographers, and none of them felt a need to rent anything on a regular basis.
I don’t mean to rain on your parade — and maybe I’m dead, dead wrong. I’d love to hear from other Premiere pros, and as I said, you can take this question to the business forum as well.

November 5, 2006 at 1:30 amI’d have to agree with Tim pretty much right down the line.
A rental or hire business needs something that a potential customer can’t afford to own. In editing these days, the ‘editor’ is often that commodity as the equipment is, as Tim points out, affordable to almost anyone now.
I use Premiere Pro but when people rent out my suite, they rent it with my butt in the chair, operating the system and creating value with the combination of the hardware/software and my expertise (no laughing now…).
Earlier this year, I edited and delivered an HD project shot on Sony HDV, and edited on a beefy laptop with PPro/CineForm…the editing just isn’t the purchase hurdle it used to be.
As a rental business, I wonder if your fellow wedding/event guys might have more need for an extra camcorder in certain situations and it might make sense to rent one when needed instead of invest in one…or a jib, or something of that nature?

November 5, 2006 at 12:46 pmI completely agree with both your and Tim Wilson’s comments. I’ll just throw in my $.02 if for no other reason than to add one more “Tim” to the mix…
One thing I would rent if available and affordable would be some studio space that’s already professionally decked out for chromakey. Perhaps one room with Reflecmedia curtains (both hanging and on the floor), light-rings, etc. Maybe another room with a more traditional setup with well-balanced lighting. Anyway, I have neither the space nor the budget to create this but I do shoot chromakey more and more often these days.
Thoughts?
And you’re right, this probably belongs more in the business forum than here.

November 5, 2006 at 3:04 pmHaving your name in red helps you spot your own posts. M posts show my name in red as well. Quite handy. I also would be interested in being able to occasionally rent a room outfitted in ReflecMedia. Buying that stuff is just something I can’t justify.
