G’day. I’m making my bands first music video using Sony Vegas Pro 11. Learning as I go. All is going reasonably smoothly except when I try to add the Starburst effect to a section of the project. I have a new computer which my web master built for me to do these projects. Intel Core i5-3330 3.0 Hz processor with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, Gigabyte ‘Ultra Durable’ GA-B75M-D3V motherboard, 1TB hard drive, Nvigia GT630 2GB 128 bit graphics card. Runs all the video with no problems at all no matter how many FX I put on each section. Except when I put the Starburst effect on a section. Just that alone will mean when I play it in real time in the video preview window, it slows down, stops, won’t handle that 3 or 4 sec section at all. Even when I apply the Starburst very ‘lightly’. Any suggestions? Peter

    Is Starburst a SONY FX?

What Build of VP11 are you using? As long as you’re operating on a 64bit OS, you may benefit from upgrading to VP12.

Also, I’m reading some concerns on using nVidia Series 6xx for Vegas. Do you have GPU acceleration enabled? I’m running a 5xx series nVidia card and have been getting almost acceptable Previewing down to Half Preview quality.

Unfortunately, the results you’re getting are not unknown and the more I read over 3 Vegas forums suggests what you’re getting is atypical for VP11, attempting to use complex FX-ing.

These varied GPU Cards with this driver and that driver update,
This works and that doesnt, this series and that series….
For the longest while this has become very irritating.

Try turning off GPU Support and see what happens.

[peter gillies] ” Except when I put the Starburst effect on a section”

What do you mean “section”? We have Events. And we have Events on a Track. And we have Regions and we have Time Selections? What is the “section” you refer to?

OK, Peter, I’m getting Half Preview 25fps of FX-Starburst on 1440x1080i on VP11. VP12 is similar.

Does your “web master” know anything about matching components to workloads? Here is how Intel classifies their processors:

Core i3: Smart performance starts here for common tasks like listening to music

Core i5: Smart performance with a speed boost for video, photos, email and Internet

Core i7: Ultimate smart performance for multimedia creation and serious multitasking

If you are editing video, you are a multimedia creator and really should have a Core i7 processor. It’s not that a Core i5 will not work, it’s just that it won’t work as fast as a Core i7. Also the NVIDIA GT630 is not powerful enough for GPU accelerated FX like Starbust. You need a GTX class card at a minimum for heavy GPU accelerated FX. So your problem may just be that your new PC isn’t up to the task of using FX like Starburst.

Starbust is a very GPU intense FX and will slow any machine to a crawl. Use it sparingly only where needed and don’t expect real-time playback. Some FX are just like that.

I have an NVIDIA Quadro 400 GPU with a Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E and I get about 19-20 fps using Starbust on video at Good(Half) preview and maybe 23-24 fps at Preview(Auto). Since Starbust is GPU accelerated, your GPU will play a big part in how fast it plays back. As I said your GT is probably not up to the task. The combination of your Core i5 and GT series GPU is probably why it’s so slow. Those components really aren’t rated for multimedia content generation.

FWIW, in my Vegas 14 build, Starburst crashes the app — Core i7, 4.2Ghz 32 GB RAM, AMD RX470.

    • Setting RAM preview to 3,000 or 0 made no difference.
    • Disabling GPU acceleration avoids the crash and it works properly.

This has little to do with how fast the system can keep up — there’s something in the Starburst code which doesn’t play properly with GPU implementation.

[Red-Rob Rothkopf] “This has little to do with how fast the system can keep up — there’s something in the Starburst code which doesn’t play properly with GPU implementation.”

    Working nicely here.

    [Red-Rob Rothkopf] “AMD RX470.”

Assuming you have the latest BUILD, you need to explore the compatibility of your GPU with VEGAS14. NB: You state that:

[Red-Rob Rothkopf] “FWIW, in my Vegas 14 build”

You’re implying that the BUILD is the same as the VEGAS version – it is not. I have Vegas 14 BUILD 270. Do check your BUILD number.

I can not reproduce your experience. My GPU acceleration is ON. Starburst FX is applied with many many parameters changed over an adjusted 17 second Event. Here is my successful result:

So, no, I don’t agree with your premise that there is a fault within the coding of Starburst FX because it is working swiftly here with my GPU activated for acceleration. And consequently I don’t agree that your system is capable of dealing with this FX.

As I said, do confirm your GPU AMD RX470 card is OFX compatible with Vegas14. If it is, then check its driver set is up to date and IF you need to install any required CUDA.

Bottom line here is that Starburst FX is working here with my setup with GPU activated.

Your signature-line says you’re using an NVIDIA card.

Other people have posted also, that the Starbust and Defocus effects crash when using AMD cards like the RX470, which has been recommended by many others as an excellent-performing card with Vegas (and I agree with the performance assessment). This is not a new problem, only a problem that appears (by searching threads) to have been around for a while, which now affects me adversely the same way it has been affecting some others.

FWIW — I understand the difference between a version # and build # — it’s just a semantic detail of the version-numbering scheme, and when I wrote “my Vegas 14 build” I probably meant “my Vegas 14 configuration”.
