Standard def to HD playback
Posted by Kim Mckay on November 21, 2008 at 2:13 amHi —
We don’t have a BluRay DVD player for where we will screen and wanted to know how to go about viewing Standard def DV NTSC on a HD consumer moniter…
I”ve had the problem of the 4:3 inside the 16:9 as well and you know that looks very bad!
Any advice on what specs to use on compressor? or any other way to do this?
thanks!

November 22, 2008 at 5:48 amAs Daniel notes, the monitor can likely offer some solutions. It can probably be set to center cut the 4:3 source and therefore provide a full screen aspect correct playback of your 4:3 source, although that does mean that 25% of your image will be cropped, 12.5% each from top and bottom. Alternatively the monitor might be able to stretch the 4:3 source so as to fill the full 16:9 screen, but then the aspect will be wrong ie everything will be distorted, folks will be short and fat, circles will become ellipses etc The only real solution is to create a pan and scan 16:9 version of your edit. That way at least you get to control the cropping and framing on an individual shot by shot basis.

November 22, 2008 at 12:03 pmHeee … yes indeed, Daniel, you have it in a nutshell. Its all about effective communication and, where thats lacking, interpretation.
If reckon if we can figure this one out we should be ready for interpreting the bigger stuff, like Hong Kong’s Basic Law, The Deed Sea Scroll, heck, even the Qur’an 🙂No worries
