  • Standard Def DV/DVCPRO .mov Rendered from Vegas

    Hi!

I have a question that I’ve been trying to find an answer for the last few days. A broadcast company is asking me to deliver some of our companies DVCAM masters as .mov files rendered with the DV/DVCPRO codec. I’m using Vegas 10 btw. Easy enough, I thought, having followed instruction I found here in one thread or another. Here’s how I went about that: I selected Quicktime7 as the file type, then under template, selected uncompressed, clicked the “custom” button and made sure the frame size was NTSC 720×480 @ a frame rate of 29.97, with PAR of 0.909. I then moved the quality slider to 100% (high). Finally, I hit “ok” to render.

The problem I am running into is that when I brought the rendered file into Vegas to compare against the original imported DVCAM footage, I had horizontal black bars at the top and bottom of the frame (and as you would expect, the picture was squished) in the preview window. So I checked the file properties from the Vegas media window and saw that the PAR of the file I just rendered was showing as 1.0 square, when I had in fact set it to 0.909 when I rendered it a few moments before.

I did a lot of reading up on this but I’m still none the wiser as to what is actually going on and if there’s something else I need to do, or if it’s just the way Vegas is displaying the DVCPRO rendered .mov file.

So I guess this is my question: Should my rendered DV/DVCPRO files be good to go or do I need to do something special for the PAR?

    Thanks!

    Hey Aubrey,

I suspect you’re fine, and it sounds like you did everything right. If it looks as it should after re-selecting non-square pixel on the event when you check it on your timeline, you should be good.

I say this, also, because this is a classic issue that stations are used to seeing, and (unless there’s a complete moron in the play-to-air department) they’ll know the adjustment to make if it looks incorrect on their end. You can even include a note for them to make sure they use non-square PAR.

Can’t wait for SD to disappear altogether…

Thank you, Kelly! And yes, if I change the PAR of the rendered clip from within Vegas, it displays as normal – so, hopefully whatever editing software they use will be able to do the same. I’ll send a note with the files as an added precaution.

You’re welcome, and I’ll give you the added assurance that even if everything you do is flawless, some twenty-something in the play-to-air department will find a way to screw something up.

I stop calling anymore when I see my efforts ruined on air.
