Not much great choice in that price range to be honest. I’d go for a used Canon GL2 or Sony PD150.

I’d be up for spending more. What is your recommendation for most inexpensive, high quality camera in low light situations? I’d really appreciate any thoughts you have.

I would strongly second the GL2. It will work good in low light, and has a better zoom than the DVX, if say, you had to set up the camera from across the room.

Most inexpensive and high quality are at odds. If you want to spend 2K those are solid cameras. How much more do you wish to spend? Once you get to about $3K that’s when you have more options.

Since you are in need of good audio as well, I’d go with a camera that can take XLR microphone cable inputs as well.

Will some one be shoting you, or will you be locking the camera to a staged position?

Most of the time, I will get someone to shoot me while I am onstage. In certain rare instances, I may have to lock the camera off and do it myself.

Do you know if the GL2 has XLR inputs?

Also – I have heard that the GL2 is a great camera, but that several Canons have had problems with the “EJect Cassette” feature. Namely, that it tells you to just eject the cassette sometimes in the middle of shooting.

Do any of you know anything about this?

Don’t know about that problem.

The Canon has the ability to use audio adapters for the XLR connector. XLR connectors are a good thing to have if you want to use the house mix of your stage audio into your camera.
