    In the maual, I couldn’t find any reference to to”standby” mode or an auto-shutoff (after 5 minutes or something like that). is there such a thing on the dvx100a or do you just turn it off all the time. thanks

    Yes Tom, both are avaiable from “other functions” menu, under tape protect. POWEROFF sets the power off after 5 minutes and STBY sets the cylinder head to the stop mode, so the camera takes longer to start recording when you hit record button. Page 50 in the manual.
