  • Stabilizing only the first few frames…and ending with the original anchor point

Posted by Derek Beck on March 27, 2007 at 4:02 am

    Hi all,

I have a telecined short film, and the original film was cut and finished to film before telecine. The physical cutting of the film had some slight alignment problems, so there is a slight “bump” after each cut as the misaligned sprocket holes went through the printer.

So, I’m trying to, on this video version, just stabilize the first few frames after each cut. However, I’m using the stabilizor, tracking a point, and just analyzing a few of the first frames until I get past the “bump”. However, I’m finding that the result is my entire frame’s anchor point is off at the end of this effect. So, say, I’ve used this on the first 10 frames of a shot, then every frame after that within the shot is left with a slightly off anchor point, and the visual result is that say the whole frame is enough left that there is a significant black edge to the right of the frame.

How do I correct only the first few frames of any given shot, but end up with the rest of the shot all perfectly centered and unaffected?

I’m trying to beat a deadline too, so any quick responses greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!!!
    Derek

Forgot to say, I’m using AAE Pro 6.0. Thanks!

I believe you can solve that problem this way:

Once you’ve tracked and applied the stabilization, go to the last stabilized keyframe and select all previous ones of the layer in the timeline. Considering that this very frame should be in place and isn’t, clic on reset. This will put that frame in it’s default position and won’t reset the other keyframes, but it will move them the exact number of pixels from their relative position.

Am I selecting all of the keyframes (target keyframes & anchor point keyframes)? But my position on the last one, which should be at the original location (aka what would result when I click “reset”) I haven’t played with it yet, but doing it just for the anchor point seems to make everything run smooth up to that last frame…then it sort of jerks into final position.

If I understood your question properly, only the anchor points are modified. So just select the anchor points and clic reset while being on the last one.

If that does not work and position data is not modified, change that value with the timeline positioned at the last keyframe for the anchor points.

If none of these works, there’s a dirtier way that should work: go go any point of the timeline after the stabilization, create a null object and attach the layer to that null object. Then change al necessary transform values to the null object to correct the video layer.

Thanks, it seemed to work out all right. I had some issues beyond just the frame moving during the print, like it slightly distorted…I just had to keep them as it was hard to undistort to match the frames following, but it looks well enough. Thanks again for you advice! Derek
