Squeezing to 490×316 f4v – getting judder
Hi,
I am a squeeze novice but have some preset Sorenson Squeeze 7 settings which allow me to squeeze FCP7 .mov files into f4V files for streaming video on the net.
Recently, we have been given some footage for a film which when squeezed to 490×276 plays out fine on VLC. We were asked to squeeze the .mov to 490×316 but when this is played out on VLC it lags.
What am I doing wrong?
The technical information is below.
I am using a MAC vsn 10.5.8
The original film was edited and exported using FCP7
The original footage footage was ingested as Apple proRes422
We exported as a quicktime and then squeezed it at 490×316 with these filters: Sorenson h.264 and aac.Plus v2
As I don’t know much about compression, any help would be gratefully received. If I have left out information then please let me know and I will try my best to supply.

That’s a very odd size. Where does it come from?

It’s for the company webpage. Normally it’s 490×276 but we have to add subtitles and the website guys would like the subtitles bolted onto the bottom of the box which increases the dimensions to 316.
We’ve done it once before, and had no problems, so I’m not sure why it is lagging this time. The footage we are using has not been shot by us…

Ok, so let’s take a giant step back. It’s not an obvious problem.
Something isn’t right (and that odd size is bothering me) – so we’re going to look at the whole picture.

You’re on a mac, editing in FCP.
You’re using ProRes – which ProRes and what is the size + frame rate?How are you getting your video out of FCP? Are you exporting as QT conversion, exporting as a QT (Reference or full) or going through Compressor (which Squeeze 7 talks to)?
Which version of squeeze are you using?
You’re compressing to the codec (not filter) h.264 for a flash 9 mp4. What the specific settings you’re using? Are you using a preset (I don’t think you are.) Please test a compression with a preset near your final output, to see if a stock setting works.
Then, let’s hear what you changed in a preset…from that we’ll have some insight.
