  • Square/Rectangular Pixel Issue- A DVD for a Computer

    Hi,

I have a film that uses my clients logo. The logo was created with Illustrator/photoshop and it is a circle, so if something hasn’t been properly adjusted for the correct pixel shape, I know it. I successfully prepared all the PS graphics in the film, including the logo, so that when I played the film on a NTSC monitor, everything looked correct. Then I encoded using compressor and made a DVD using DVD studio pro. I played this DVD on a TV- everything looks correct. Yipeee!

Here is the issue, now the client would like a DVD that when someone puts in their pc or mac it plays just like it would on a DVD player/TV but they want things to still look correct in terms of the aspect ratio.

I would like some advice on the best way to do this.

One thing I tried, just to see how it would play on the computer screen with quicktime or real player for example, was I exported from FCP with quicktime conversion. I used a Soorenson 3 codec, key frame rate: 15, bitrate 6400 kbits/sec, and I changed the size to 654×480. This version looks pretty good when I play it- a few graphics look more jagged than others, but that may be due to how I converted them to look right for NTSC right?

SO if these settings are good (tell me if they aren’t) what should I do now to make a DVD that still looks right on the computer- again I’m suing DVDSP.

    Thanks

    You are overthinking this.

Computer DVD players, like the MacOSX DVD Player App automatically correct for the pixel aspect ratio difference and display everything properly.

If it looks right on a TV it will look right when played in the DVD Player app.

This may not be true if you intend to view the MPEG files on the desktop w/o using the DVD Player app.

Oh I see- so only if they want a copy to view with say Quicktime do I have to export and change the size (654×480), right?
