This issue has always confused me a bit. If I’m creating an FCP project primarily for play on TV, do I need to make sure the project is composed of square vs. non-square pixels, and if it will be seen on computer, vice versa? If not, when do I have to be concerned with pixel shape? Thanks. – Rob

What format are you shooting, SD or HD?

You need to make sure that your pixels match your footage. Examples, DV, DV50, Uncompressed SD all have non-square pixels (NTSC-CCIR 601/DV). HD uncompressed has square pixels. If you’re doing graphics in other programs, you to make sure you keep the pixel Aspect Ratio the same as your footage.

If you’re going to do to broadcast then you’ll have to make a master tape which means that it will use it’s own pixel aspect ratio.

If you have any question about what pixel aspect ratio your footage is, just scroll in the browser until you see the pixlel aspect ratio column.

And the FCP manual has information on creating images in square pixel programs like Photoshop.
