Is there a quick way to make a sputnik-like object out of an editable sphere? I’m very new to Cinema 4d and would like to create a sphere with cone-like spikes extruded out – have spent all day and can’t come up with anything! Much appreciated.

Try this:
Create a Sphere with about 4 to 5 segments (or else)…
(maybe try an Icosahedron with 9 segments)
Make Editable… Select all polygons…
Select the Matrix Extrude from the Structure Menu..
Drag in the viewport…
Hold down the shift or control key when dragging…
If needed, drag the Sphere into a HyperNurbs…Regards
