I recently got a call from a small cable outfit asking for an MPG2 file (w/ associated aiff I assume) rather than a tape. I thought this was interesting since I’ve been talking with DG and Streamcast, etc. off an on for a few years about doing this but it was (at the time) an expensive option. It looks like the day of the “virtual dub” snuck up on me. To me, it seems like MPG2 along with a home-grown web distribution system is the wave of the future (high quality :30 is only about 30 megs with audio).

I’m wondering how many stations accept these files as opposed to BetaSP, etc.

Is this really a big deal or am I all excited over nothing, like someone saying “hey, I just discovered that water is wet!” It wouldn’t be the first time.

I do this fairly often with Time Warner Cable on my area. They have an FTP site at their B.O.C. center that I can transfer finished spots into. I usually send a higher quality Meridien compressed or a Quicktime, either DVC25, DVC50 or 8-bitUC rather than an Mp2 file. Depends on whether I finish on Apple or Avid.
After figuring out their formatting and getting an account/password setup, it’s actually rather quick and easy. I can send it right from the computer that I edit on too! They dub out a backup copy on tape right at their BOC and save it there.
Rather a slick way to do it. Most TV stations haven’t gotten this far yet. 🙁
