Splitting stereo tracks into two mono tracks
Posted by Cotter on November 9, 2006 at 4:27 pmHello, I recorded content on Mini-DV. I recorded audio in “stereo”, actually two mono tracks each with its own mike. Adobe imported the audio and video fine but the stereo audio is joined into one track on the timeline. Is there a way to split a stereo track into two separate mono tracks so I can edit the mikes individually? I tried the manual and the Adobe website. The manual only talks about taking mono tracks and making them stereo. I want to do the opposite. Please help. Thanks.

November 9, 2006 at 6:25 pmProbably the easiest way would be to export a wav, split it into two mono tracks in an audio editor, and then import those two tracks back into premiere.
I suppose another way to do it would be to make a second copy of the audio track, and pan one all the way left and the other all the way right. You’ll probably have to unlink the audio from the video to go this route.

November 9, 2006 at 8:41 pmthere have been some previous threads about this. People record different things on the two tracks for a reason, and panning is not the reason.
In other editing software a stereo signal comes in as left and right tracks, but not in Premiere.

if you select the source in the Project window PRIOR to using int anywhere in the timeline
Under the edit menu I believe there are some Audio Options…
this let’s you determine how you want to treat the audio in question when it’s editied in a sequence:
1) Stereo
2) Split Mono – Left/right each become a mono sources and are edited to mono tracks in the sequence.
3) Split Stereo – Create a stereo source from both of the audio channels of the source (so 2 lefts and 2 rights) and can be edited on to stereo tracks in a sequence (premiere default).remember that this works in concert with the types of tracks available to you on the sequence timeline…so you might want add what you need prior to editing this stuff to the sequence.
This is the closest I can get Premiere to mimicking the behavior of other NLE’s
still not quite ideal….but getting closer….

November 10, 2006 at 12:04 pmSelect the clip in the Project window and then choose Clip (menu bar) > Audio Options>> Break out to mono.
This process basically prevents editing the clip in the source window and makes it difficult to edit in the timeline as the Lift and Extract commands only work on selected tracks and one can have only one audio track selected. -

November 10, 2006 at 12:53 pmThat’s why I don’t like the break out..
at least by defining the behavior…al the related clip elements cn be semected at the same time for edits…

November 10, 2006 at 1:25 pmThanks everyone for posting comments.
I own the “original” Premiere Pro (version 7.0). If I update to Pro 2.0 I should be able to avoid having to break out the audio by using this new feature in the project window? Kind of silly that it’s 2006 and Adobe still can’t do something basic like add a sync lock to audio tracks in the timeline. You have HD-DV now but no sync lock. LOL.

November 10, 2006 at 4:39 pmMedia 100 does this very well – you can even unsync audio and video, move one track or the other and then re-sync if so inclined. Maybe that was the $10,000 PCI card that did that function, but probably not!

October 27, 2007 at 4:17 amquick question – I noticed that according to a prior response to this thread that if you break out the audio to mono the process……
“basically prevents editing the clip in the source window and makes it difficult to edit in the timeline as the Lift and Extract commands only work on selected tracks and one can have only one audio track selected.”
Has there been improvements in CS3 ?
I was hoping to be able to turn off either channel A or B (instead of all the audio) while I edit in the source window – but haven’t seen the either or option.
