    Good Morning All,

Using footage from my HV20 and editing Sony Vegas 8.0c, I was wondering if somebody could point me in the proper direction as to find out more information regarding what I would like to do.

After capturing the video to my hard drive and converting the files to 24p using TMPGEnc 4 Express, I started a project in Vegas. Using Sony’s match media settings, my project properties are HDV 1080-24p (1440×1080, 23.976 fps).

My questions have to deal with track motion.

I have made smaller framed screens using track motion. Then using multiple video tracks I have made multiple frame video.

I don’t really understand the relationship under Position – X, Y, width and height.

For example, I have made one of the frames widthxheight 810×607.5. How do I determine what the X and Y coordinates need to be to put this frame in
    1. The top left screen
    2. Top right
    3. Bottom left, etc.

With that in mind, would like to create a “Brady Bunch” type of ending for our family video – you know, split screen with each family member looking to another family member and smiling/waving.

With 4 family members, I thought this would be easy. I divided 1440×1080 by 4 = 360×270. When I enter these dimensions into width and height of track motion, the resulting frames look WAY too small to be just 1/4th of the screen.

Once I figure out the correct dimensions for the 4 screens, I would then need the information for placing the screens properly – question 1.

I hope I have explained myself properly.

    Thanks in advance,

If you only have 4 pictures (family members) then you would want to divide by 2 not 4. This would give you two columns of two or 4 pics.
You may want to move the first one into the desired position by hand and eyeball. Then you can align the others up with it. I am sure there is a mathematical way to do it but thats not my strong point. There are scripts that can accomplish this also.

As Terry said, the size should be half of 1440×1080 which is 720×540. Since Vegas will keep the aspect you only have to change the Width to 720 and the Height will snap to 540.

Placement is a little harder to wrap your head around. Are you ready?

An X,Y position of 0,0 keeps the image centered in the frame. X moves the frame left for negative values and right for positive values. Y moves the frame down for negative values and up for positive values. To move the frame to the left you want to make X a negative 1/2 of the width of the 720 frame so X = -360. To move it up the Y axis you want to move positive half the height of the 540 frame so Y = 260.

Therefore, to move a frame of 720×540 to:

    Upper Left X= -360, Y= 260
    Upper Right X= 360, Y= 260
    Lower Right X= 360, Y= -260
    Lower Left X= -360, Y= -260

I bet you wish you had paid more attention in Geometry class. 😉
