splitting captured avi file
Hi..i recently captured 90 minutes of footage for a community projectd in Vegas pro8. Files were saved as a 13gb & a 8gb avi file. I would like to split the avi files to give to someone to edit in Final Cut with his Mac.I assumed i could load the footage into Vegas, cut to smaller portions, and render out as an avi, and avoid recompression and quality loss. Was hoping to be able to fit files on a few dvd disks . I must be doing something wrong as the 8gb file i split in half renders out to 47gb, yes not 4.7gb, file size so no way i am gonna burn those to disk. Would anyone know what i am doing wrong or maybe a better way to handle this? Any help would be much appreciated…Thanks

It sounds like you are burning it back to an uncompressed avi file rather than a DV avi file. Would be grossly larger.

rendering to NTSC DVD seems to have taken care of at least the file size problem…thanks Terry, appreciate the help….

That would probably render it as an MPEG2 which would make it a smaller file but would degrade the resolution.

Hey Terry…am still a little confused. I selected the NTSC DV template because i didn’t see an DV option. Degrading the quality is not what i am after. Should i be using the “default template (uncompressed)” to produce exact copies of the regions i select? …Thanks again

I am going to assume that you are using SD and not HD.
Use save as type : Video for windows (.avi)
and template : NTSC DVIt should use smart rendering and use no recompression and you should get the size files you are looking for.

Hey Terry…yes,i am working with sd. I meant to say i used the NTSC DV template the second time around, not NTSC DVD for those who may be wondering also. All is good now….Thanks

You want the NTSC DV for the exact copy. As that should be what you captured from your camera (unless you are in PAL land). Your camera does not produce uncompressed avi.
