Splitting Audio
Posted by Chip Hess on January 15, 2025 at 7:31 pmTwo audio sources showing as one track. Waveform indicates two sources. I have NO idea what the camera operator was thinking. Is there a way to get PP 2022 to display the two sources separately? I can dupe the track and pan, but at least in Avid there is a display option to show I think two mono tracks.

January 15, 2025 at 8:25 pmAre the two sources ’embedded’ together into one track? Hopefully not, and one is on the left channel and one is on the right. This is how I handle it. Put your audio on two different tracks in the timeline. On one apply the effect ‘Fill Left with Right’ and on the other apply effect ‘Fill Right with Left.’
If the two sources are embedded together, then I’m not sure how you would fix that.

January 15, 2025 at 9:47 pmHello Chip! To display the two audio sources as separate tracks in Premiere Pro, you’ll need to change how the audio channels are interpreted. (Locate the File in the Project Panel, find the related clip, right-click on the clip in the Project Panel and select Modify > Audio Channels).
In the Modify Clip window, you’ll see options to configure how Premiere interprets the audio channels. Change the Channel Format to Mono if you want each source to appear on its own separate track. Make sure both channels are assigned to their own tracks and click OK.
Drag the updated clip from the Project Panel into the Timeline. You should now see the audio displayed as separate tracks.
This way, you don’t have to duplicate the track and pan manually, and it’s closer to the workflow you might be used to in Avid.
Let me know if you need further clarification!
Best,
Ivan Eldredge G.

January 16, 2025 at 8:13 amI would tend to shoot it into ffmpeg and split it out into separate physical files personally, I find it more reliable to manage, and simplifies the workflow when I want to take it into Audition for further tweaking.

January 21, 2025 at 5:27 pmI’m with Bob on this one.
Fastest way is to copy on to 2nd track, and then fill right or left.
Often, my camera operator has put camera mic in one channel, so I can discard that altogether.Ovbiously, if it is a recurring problem, you might want to check import settings.
