I recently worked on a 30 second commercial with a serious deadline. The director wanted a few split screen in the commercial in order to make all the content fit into 30 seconds. I post on creative cow for help but no one really got back to answer the question. So I wanted to post this up to help someone else that might have to do the split screen. The project was very effects heavy with lots of after effects work. I was originally going to do it in after effects. After working on it for a bit I found it time consuming endeavor in after effects. After seeing how much time I was spending on doing this split screen. I jumped on the net to see if I could find a plugin that could do this a bit faster for me. After reading a few articles about DH Box and finding out it was only $20, I quickly purchased the plug in and downloaded it. One of the first things I liked about the plugin was that it worked in final cut pro. Witch was great as I could use the real time playback and it was very simple to use. I did watch the online tutorial that they offer and I was up and running in about 10 minutes. Within half hour I had a few versions to show the director, he was quite happy with the results. I was happy that I was able to make this happen very quickly once I started using the DH box plug in. If you’re interested you can see the project at:

    Hi Roberto

Nice way to get the view count up…

The commercial has a number of ‘effects’ shots, but the split screen effects you were after can be quite easily keyframed in FCP – you only have to set the start and end point.

However – I’m a big fan of digital heaven’s products, and I’ll be having a look at DH_box a little closer, so thanks for the reminder…

DH Box. Probably the first plug you should buy from DH. Eventually, you’ll want them all.

    Dear Ben,

I agree that the split screen could have been done in fcp with a few key frames, but I found it a bit time consuming when I went to add borders and crop the image and if i wanted to try it out with different clips. I had to start over every time. Plus originally I was going to do it with white borders so it looked more like a comic book. After trying out a few different looks I went with black borders. To tell the truth the borders that I wanted was the biggest problem. I could not find an easy way to do it. So when I found DH_Box pulgin it added borders to my split screen. I think I saved a lot of time because of it. Yes your probably correct you can do it all in fcp with out the plugin but I could not figure out an easy way to do it.

Ben I want to thank you for taking the time to look it over and for your comments. As you know when you do these kinda projects a few extra hits never hurts.

    Roberto

    Wow of a commertial!

    I liked your Doritos movie…

I´m commenting a long time after the date of this post but boy, me salvaste la vida con esta solución…

Right now I´m facing exactly the same problem: time consuming several splits VS deadline. Will check the DH-Box.

    Gracias
