Split Screen effect
Posted by Hardeep Gill on December 18, 2008 at 11:33 pmHey guys, I have a video and i only want a certain portion of the it to have the split screen effect. The track motion just doesnt work out for me since it does the whole video. I cant really get the crop/pan to work for me either; which i think might be the best way. Anyone have any ideas or soultions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And oh by the way Im using sony vegas studio 9a. Thanks in advance

December 19, 2008 at 4:24 amAre you using just one video clip and trying to split screen that?
If so then you can certainly use the pan/crop to do that but if you want control over both halves independently you will need to put the same clip on two tracks.
Otherwise if you have two tracks the track motion will certainly work very well and you wont have to crop anything. Let me know if this is what you need.

December 19, 2008 at 10:34 pmHey Joe, thanks for the reply.
I have a 2 tracks, a main video and then a another track which is about 30 or so seconds long.
At a certain point in the main video i want to split the screen in half(vertically)and have the two tracks playing simultaneously beside each other.
Ive tried the track motion, but it does it to the whole main video and not only the 30 or so seconds i need. The second video i can use track motion cause its the only one on the timeline. Thats my problem.
And thanks again for the reply. -

December 20, 2008 at 1:47 amOK I understand what you want to do. You will need to keyframe the main video with the motion tracking and set the motion tracking to what you desire in the second clip. If you don’t know how to keyframe look in the help files or look on You Tube there are many very good tutorials. Basically you will tell the track to stay at one size until reaching the split view. It’s not hard to do you just have to line your media where you would like the split and then keyframe that into the track motion.

December 20, 2008 at 1:59 amIf you don’t know how to keyframe then just add another track and split the main track where you want the split view. Drag your clip to the new track and use the track motion to resize the clip. Of course you will need to resize the other clip as well. Hope this helps.

December 20, 2008 at 2:14 pmI have a tutorial on my web site: Creating a Split Screen using a Mask that uses the mask tool in Pan/Crop along with the position tool to take two subjects that are center screen and display them side-by-side. I’m not sure if the Movie Studio version has the Mask feature. If it doesn’t you will need to drive the mask with a black & white image on a track above which complicates things but still works.

December 23, 2008 at 6:05 pmHey guys, thanks for all the help. I ended up just splitting the main video where i wanted to get the effect. I created a new video track and then moved the track that i had spitted to the new video track. and then on another video track had the other video. So i just ended up using track motion to the 2 new video tracks and everything worked out great. Thanks for the help.
