  • Split screen effect – Motion or FCP?

Posted by Steven Galvano on July 5, 2005 at 9:37 pm

I’m looking to do a classic split screen effect — with a hard edge in the middle. I have been using a garbage matte in FCP – but its sloppy because there are cuts on each side. Each new clip has to be re-centered in it’s half and properly matted. The edge is always a bit off clip to clip.

I also want the “hard edge in the middle” to changes colors clip to clip.
    How should I attack this?

    Thanks

Put your video clips for the split screen on video tracks 2 and 3. Use the Crop tool to crop the sides to create the split and position each side of the split accordingly.

Then place a Matte color on Video Track 1 and change the color to suit as you change shots.

Alternatively, create two squares for the splits and use a Travel Matte Alpha to key the split videos into the correct side of the split and again, put a colored matte behind them.

Follow Walter’s advice, or create the different color still mattes in photoshop/after effects and put them on the uppermost track. That way all you have to do is position the video underneath. This will ensure the split in the middle is always the same size. Hope this helps.

Or use the matte generation tool in FCP. No reason to go to photoshop to create a couple mattes of boxes.

I’d just create a slug, and crop it half way. Then use that as my matte to alpha matte images. Then you’d be able to move the images inside the mattes pretty quick and easy.

But if you only had a couple to do, I’d just crop the clips.
