Split a video mp4 file ?
Hi, I made a project in Premiere Pro and exported it to h264 via media encoder.
Its 16GB.
Since, my DVDs are 8.5GB, I need to split this file to 8GB each and write to 2 DVDs.
IS there a way I can split the 16GB mp4 file to 2 parts ?

Well my first question has to be how long is your project if you have a 16GB H.264 file? Our 30 minute episodes of This American Land are 28GB at ProRes and come in around 1GB at H.264.
I’m not sure of a way to simply split the H.264 in half other than to re-render the original video in two parts. The Encoder window does show you the estimated file size when you start the render, so I would advise you to look at that when you start the render process. It’s usually pretty close to the completed size of the file.

The only recommendation I have is to re-render it in two parts and check that “Estimated File Size” when you start the render to ensure the file will be small enough.
But if it’s an HD file, why aren’t you burning it onto a BluRay disc? Those are 25GB minimum.

That was my question as well, DVD video is SD mpeg2 compression and 2 hours at a bit rate of 4mbps will yield you a file just over 4GB. H.264 is a much more efficient encoding scheme than mpeg2 and should give you better results and taking up 40-60Mb per min. Are you just trying to encode for delivering a file? If so invest in a drive to move the file around. There is no reason to to place it on an optical disk that I can think of. Please share what your deliverable specs are and we maybe we can help some more.

I did not make it a DVD movie, as I know, DVD wont support 1080p .
So, I simply made a mp4 file and will copy that to a DVD, so the user can view the 1080p on his PC or laptop with that DVD.
That is what Im trying to do.

“I’m not sure that would even work, not sure that the DVD would be able to play the file without stuttering playback. If you transfer the file OFF the DVD to the laptop, then it might work but even there, depending on the laptop, that’s a HUGE file.

Your best bet would be to buy an inexpensive USB drive to move the file. Burning a DVD is not the most efficient or cost effective way way of moving data around. Just the time spent in burning the disk is wasted when you could be doing something more productive.

Here are three options:
1) Using your Premiere Pro project: set the work area to the first half of the movie, export (i.e. re-render), and copy the rendered file to a DVD; set the work area to the second half of the movie, export, and copy to a second DVD; or
2) Using the existing 16GB H.264 file: Import the H.264 to Premiere Pro; create a new sequence from the imported file; set the work area to the first half of the movie and export; set the work area bar to the second half of the movie and export; or
3) Using the existing 16B H.264 file: copy the file to a USB stick, SDHC card, Blu-ray disc, or external/removable hard drive

I believe AviDemux will split without re-encoding, but I could be wrong.

No, there isn’t an easy way to segment a 16 gig file into pieces. Can I do it? Yes, you can actually use a utility to split it into multiple files and reconstruct it on the other end. You don’t want to deal with this.
It’d be easier to grab a 32 gig flash drive and send them that instead of the DVDs.
I looked at the data rate you must have used (and h.264 around 19mb/s) and you *could* go back to the original and recompress it so you get 2 hrs as an h.264 file – around 8-9 mb/s (very watchable, still larger than youtube’s data rate) you’ll get a file that fits onto a DVD-9; but again, I’d suggest a flash drive over it.
