Spinning Wheel of Death upon Capture?
Hello there,
I have never had an issue when it comes to capturing HD dv material onto my iMac. Now, however, with the settings all properly applied on comp and cam, when I attempt to capture my footage, the spinning wheel of death pops up. It takes about 20-25 seconds for it to clear up, but by that time, I’ve already squandered valuable footage.
Recently, I added an external hard drive to my computer. Could that possibly be slowing down my computer’s performance? Granted, I have never updated my iMac Leopard’s ram, and there has been a slightly noticeable decrease in speed – is it that my ram is too tired to capture at an appropriate pace? Or is there a setting that I might have mismanaged within Final Cut Pro?

Okay, be specific… Was it firewire 400, firewire 800? Did you reformat it for the Mac?
How full are your other disk drives?
Do you have Disk Warrior? If not, get it and run it on all drives, especially your system drive.

I capture off of a Firewire 400, 6-pin. My new hard drive is a Western Digital 2TB. As most western digitals run on Fat32 out of the box, I had to reformat the drive to allow for digital transfers of more than 4GB.

I should also note that my discs shouldn’t be considered full. The 2TB disc I recently added doesn’t have any more than 30GB’s currently on it.
I should again press that this issue has coincided with the addition of my new hard drive, however, can adding a second hard drive onto an iMac slow down overall performance?

“Nope, that should have no impact.
If I were you, I would fix permissions on all drives using Apple Disk Utility and run Disk Warrior on all drives if you have it.
