Spinning wheel going forever upon opening project
Hi guys I’m running a fcp pro 5 on a emac g4 with a:
700 MHz Power PC G4 which I have upgraded to 768 MB SDRAM. I’m using Mac OS X 10.4My problem is after having edited with no problems for about a week. i.e. I’m about an hours work away from finishing a well edited 10 minute internet tv show.
I can’t get that hours work done because despite the fact I’ve been trouble free to this point. Now when I try to open the file it takes an eternity to open. Like ten minutes at least until the whole time line is there.
Then when I try to move the marker in the time line the spinning color wheel come back up and spins for about another 15 min or so.
It simply won’t allow me to play the timeline no matter what I do.Other factors are I have the footage/ project file sitting on an external hard drive which is linked to another computer in our household network.
The extermal hard drive still has 119.9 GB avaliable and my hard drive has 28.78 GB avaliable.
I have tried shutting down both computers and starting again. That didn’t work so I shut then both down again and left them over night in case over heating was an issue (I’m from New Zealand. It’s quite hot here atm)
I’m really quite bemused by this all. Any help would be appriciated. -

Try condensing your project – deleting all the old cuts…. every sequence has to be accounted for when you load a project file and can cause mass havoc, – in our case doing some feature film work we were getting into 8 minute load times on G5’s – condensing reduced that to 2.
more RAM would help… and footage over the cat5 network is doable in “most” situations. Also 5.1 solved some reliability problems over 5.0

I have tried deleting all the old auto save files ect (is that what you ment?) and the no longer needed sequences in the project.
I also deleted every other thing the project was saved as so I only have one final cut project now (Oddly enough this is when the trouble started)
The load time is ok. It takes about two min to open the project completly. The problem of the spinning wheel going for eternity (ie 15 min) then stoping without moving each time I try to move it remains.
Does this mean there’s still parts of the project to be loaded even though the video has been read and the blue line has dissapeared from the screen?
It’s the only thing open on my computer and I have 768GB of ram.Thank you very much for your help so far.

Just for the heck of it try something that’s become my default for things like this: try making a duplicate of the program file on your drive and open the duplicate.

I’m sorted now.
Turned out to be an issue with the network not with fcp.
