I’ve noticed this on other systems too:

Currently I have source sequences of up to 3 hours of DVCProHD material. Mostly the whole system is fairly smooth, but when I try to shuttle through these sequences (which are on a SAS attached RAID – with very high read/write figures on aja speed test) with external video on I get spinning beach balls every now and again.

Turning thumbnails off seems to help a bit, but turning off external video and just scanning through the computer monitor fixes the problem.

I can see that this problem might arise on the FW800 attached raid, but the SAS raid should be able to pull frames quick enough surely? Anything I’m missing?

System is a 12 core Mac Pro with 12GB Ram.

What aja card do you have?

AJA IO Express using PCIe card.

These are long sequences (3 hours) of DVCproHD.

Still get spinning beach ball a bit with external video off, just not as bad.
