  • Spinning an object on an axis without it moving from its center position

Hi hi. I have looked for this but I can’t seem to figure it out still. I created a coin by stacking many layerss, precomposed it and and am now attempting to have it spin on its Y axis. It works. However, as it spins, it moves right and left along the X axis instead of staying in one position while spinning. I can’t tell if this is because of how it was created or what. Something that should be so simple is becoming a major headache. Any ideas? I’ve tried spinning it 1x on Transform > Y Rotation, I’ve tried setting anchor points (doesn’t stay), I’ve tried manually positioning it (looks choppy). This is the tutorial I used to create and spin it: https://youtu.be/Rcq3uq2WNsI — You can see even his logo is moving a little to the left on each spin but mine is much more obvious. Is it inevitable? Appreciate any help, ty!

I would guess it’s a byproduct of his technique. Try hiding most of the layers, so you left with a front, middle and back layer. Then use tint to colour them differently. When you watch this back, you might be able to spot what’s happening.

If you’re after a 3D logo, years ago on the Cow there was a tutorial which used Shatter to extrude / add depth. It only requires on layer, where you set the effects force to zero. I think you also have to set the shatter map to the layer

found it! tried it but now I’m stuck because it’s not spinning it at all. I’ve tried remaking it as well…sigh. haha.

Wondering if I should try exporting as an OBJ then bringing that into a new composition and attempting rotation again? Maybe the layers in pre-comp are messing up the anchor points/ axes. Assuming I don’t need an external program to do this exporting..

If you’re going down the 3D route, then C4D Lite is included with After Effects CC. Create the file via AE’s File > New menu options.

Then the simplest way to make an extruded logo is probably to import an Illustrator version of the logo and then use the Extrude nurbs.

If you don’t have an illustrator version of the logo, I found this site a while back which is a great resource: https://seeklogo.com/

Or my favourite website (not including the COW of course): https://fontawesome.com/icons?d=gallery&p=2&q=apple which also has the Apple logo – so you could use Text with the Extrude option.

Just went to hit post and I re-read your reply. Shatter can rotate, expand the Camera Position options and you can rotate the effect’s camera around the layer.

You can also extrude shape layers directly in After Effects, without having to move into C4D Lite.

Import your Illustrator logo, then right-click it and choose Create > Shapes from Vector Layer. Make the new shape layer a 3D layer by clicking its 3D switch in the timeline/switches panel.

Open your comp settings (Ctrl+K on a PC, Cmd+K on a Mac), and in the 3D Renderer tab, choose CINEMA 4D.

Now you can twirl open the shape layer, and under Geometry, you can set the extrusion depth, bevel type, etc.

thank you. would this still work without a vector? I’m working from a jpg, and want to keep all the colors & details intact. I feel like when I vectorize images they come out looking cartoonish.
