Sphere Video Codec Needed
Posted by Marc Berry on September 2, 2009 at 2:58 amOk we are going back a bit here, but I have some footage in Sphere and in Avid, and am looking for the Sphere Codec so I can transcode them into something more use ful in Final Cut.
Any thoughts.
With thanks.

September 2, 2009 at 4:04 amJust out of curiosity I found it for you. A quick google found something on 2005 creative cow post which mentioned the accom website.
On the accom.com site choose support>legacy products ftp site
Once on the ftp site go to Non Linear Products>Sphere>Software
For some reason it takes a bit to load this screen. Wait for it and you’ll get lot of stuff including the sphere mac and nt codec.

September 2, 2009 at 4:29 amI can e-mail it to you, if that does not work out.
please note… IT WILL NOT WORK ON AN INTEL MAC.
The Sphere and the Affinity were discontinued long before there was such a thing as Intel Macs and Universal Binaries.

September 2, 2009 at 11:50 amI’d like to hear how this turns out. I’ve got a bunch of files I’d love to convert to a current format. My hunch is to get an older Mac that you can install an early version of OSX..or late System 9, attach a fw external drive and begin converting…

September 2, 2009 at 3:02 pmThe Affinity Codec plays both Sphere and Affinity files. It works on OSX…so you won’t need OS 9. I have found that the codec was buggy and a bit unpredictable in Leopard and recent Quicktime versions…but it did work. It is Power PC only.
Have not tried it in awhile.

September 2, 2009 at 3:20 pmYou know there are times I miss editing on the Cube and the Sphere! Of course I miss editing on my CMX OMNI and 3600 too!

September 2, 2009 at 6:40 pmI spent five years editing mainly on the Sphere. It actually wasn’t a bad interface, but our machine was a POS…it got to a point where out of every hour of work, I’d spend at least 20 min doing Disk Warriors, reseating cards, etc.. It was hell….so I don’t miss it.
