No plugin required – just use the Sphere filter on an image that is twice as wide as it is tall.

    Hi Mark,

I tried that but it is still flat, Camera is set to perspective, Group is in 3D, but still the image is not an shpere…. Only a flat circle..

The Sphere filter, like Extrude and other filters, creates a faux 3D effect. You can’t rotate a camera around it. Everything in Motion is flat 2D planes in 3D space.

    OK, I’ll get it.

I did try to link it to the the position X of itself, (scaled to -1), so that when using the x parameter in the plug it also moved the position X opposite, then I had it spinning…. But still not a full 3D…

I wonder will ever motion get 3D primitives ?

    Cheers Helge

Hello Helge. If you want to get into 3d I would highly recommend blender.org. It is a free 3D tool that I use. You can also export camera and keyframe information to motion for further compositing.

Here is a tutorial on how to do an earth: https://www.blenderguru.com/videos/create-a-realistic-earth

If you do a google search for sphere in blender you may find some simpler tutorials on how to map an image on a sphere. Blenderguru.com is one of my favorites so is cgcookie.com for blender tutorials.

Also, here is a sample of the latest render I did in Blender and exported the keyframes and camera to Motion: https://motion-master-templates.com/member-templates/tablet

Blender and Motion together is pretty cool once you get the hang of it, and if you watch the demo reel on the Blender.org home page you will see some amazing animations, plus it is FREE! 🙂

Let me know what you think. Have an awesome day!
