  • Spent an Hour on this Caustics Cow tutorial…going crazy :(

I know this is a relatively simple effect, but I cannot for the life of me get it to work properly. I am using 7.0 and using this tutorial, from the beginner’s section:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=1&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/tierney_jim/caustics/index.html

Ive been toiling away at as many tutorials as I can…this one has me stumped. I am aware the version difference, but really, should it matter this much?

    Whats happening:

New comp…new solid. Effect to the solid: wave world. Change view to height map (in wave world settings) to see effect in timeline. Looks fine, just like tutorial. Turn off the view on this comp.

Drag poolbottom.psd into comp. apply Caustics effect. from caustics effects menu, select “water”, then “water surface.” Select the name of the first layer that I applied wave world to.

In the tutorial, this seems tobe all I have to do. But it doesnt work for me. I see absolutely no change at all to poolbottom.psd. When I turn off poolbottom.psd, I can see the animatyion of the waveworld layer fine, in its grey. But when Iturn it off, and have just poolbottom on…all Isee is a static poolbottom.psd. Ive tried RAM preview, precomping any and all layers, etc.

Can anyone give any hints? Im going crazy over here. 😛

[Sheckmancometh] “Drag poolbottom.psd into comp. apply Caustics effect. from caustics effects menu, select “water”, then “water surface.” Select the name of the first layer that I applied wave world to.”

You have to pre-compose the layer that you applied Wave World to (move all attribues to the new pre-comp) or it won’t have an effect on the layer you’re applying Caustics to. As long as the solid is in the same comp as the Caustics layer, the Caustics effect will ‘see’ the solid as just a solid with no effects applied.
