Speeding up render times
Posted by Sherwood Ball on October 2, 2006 at 9:50 pmWill adding an AJA PCI-X card to my G5 Dual2.5Ghz cpu help speed up render
times? What can I add to my cpu to make things go faster.
I have 6 gig of Ram and the stock video card.
I don’t want to put too much money in this outdated box, but maybe

October 2, 2006 at 9:58 pmThe only way to speed up render times is a faster CPU… it’s all a CPU intensive task in FCP. You might get more real time playback with a card that offloads playback chores a bit on certain video formats, but render times will be determined by how fast your CPU is, and which version of the software you are running. The latest is fastest on any given Mac…

October 2, 2006 at 10:07 pmJerry,
I’m running 5.1.1
I’ve been avoiding updating in the middle of a project.
I’ve been a beta sufferer for many software updates until I get a green
light from those in the know.Your advice on 5.2 update?

October 3, 2006 at 2:47 am5.1.2 is safe, however, I have experienced a noticeable gamma shift (too bright) when creating DVDs using my standard workflow. I suspect either the Quicktime update or the Compressor update is responsible, but I have not been able to track this down yet.

October 3, 2006 at 3:16 amI’m not hearing a bunch of new woes with 5.1.2 at all…
Don’t think it speeds rendering, but for example… 5.1 did over 5.04 especially with HDV renders/conforms…

No big operational surprises, but, after encoding, authoring, and then burning seven 86-min DVDs that had been perfect before the update, I was a bit miffed to see the big gamma shift that I mentioned in my post above. Thats half a day of my life down the tube because someone at Apple decided they just had to change some code.

Well, now that 5.1.2 supports FXPlug if you use those plugins the speed of those renders will depend on the power of your graphics card. Expect more reliance on FxPlug in the future.

Except that short term those FX Plugs are causing more issues than helping. I had to remove all fX Plugs from our G5 Dual 2.0 because FCP would not even launch. I’m sure it will all work out long term, like when FCP 6.0 comes out, but short term, not something to really improve your workflow.

bout time they came up with some accelerator cards ala blue ice for AE back in the days.
or at least some network smart background renderer like nucleo for AE.
and to think the media 100 844x died – 4 layers 10 bit uncompressed with 80 pixels blurs made onlines a breeze….
now if FCP could come up with something like that, it would REALLY contend with Avid.
