  • Speed up rendering times – What do I need?

Posted by Will Brown on April 20, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    Hi Guys,
I am using Vegas 9, importing raw AVCHD from a Canon HD100.
    The file sizes are huge.

    I am rendering on a HP DC5100 Desktop, 2GB, 3.00GHz, Pentium 4.
The graphics card is only 64mb, but I understand that the graphics card does not help rendering times, only real time viewing.

    Should I upgrade to a Mac, G5, 2gb, 2.00Ghz?
Should I replace the Graphics card? (I cannot do this due to the slimline nature of the HP!)
    Should I get a new/faster Hard Drive?

    What do you guys think?

P.S. I can also render on a Advent 5302 laptop, Core 2 Duo, 1.83GHz, 2GB, which is sometimes quicker!
I thought the rendering times were due to the GHz?

    Thanks.
    Will.

What you should do is get a new computer as yours is very underpowered for dealing with AVCHD footage.
Prices for a computer with an i7 processor, at least two drives and lots of RAM and very reasonable these days, even in the UK.

    Hi Mike,

I know, tell me about it!
The I7 setups are about £900.
Too much for a Film Student…

    Thanks anyway.
    Will.

Will, you have other options to upgrade your opportinities in a cheaper way. AMD processors are cheaper rather than IE7. In my previous PC (Pentium D 3.40 Ghz), Sony vegas crashed many times while rendering AVCHD.

I also strongly recommend you to upgrade 64 bit system. This can make difference, if you get a better processor and motherboard supporting DDR3 1600 or more.

You can use the free proxy stream script to convert your AVCHD files temporaly to editable files, which will be replaced again by the original AVCHD files when you start rendering.

    download here:

    Thanks Murat and Theo.

I will try the script and with my computer, Vegas had never (touch wood) crashed, but it takes 1h.30 ish, to render 1 video track and 1 audio track of 10 minutes…

I will have a look at buying a faster 64 bit cp.
    Thanks.

I’ve been going through the same thought process. After much research, I’m in the process of upgrading my computer with a Core i5-2500k, H67 mobo, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and Win7 64.

The +50% price bump for the i7-2600k generally only provides a 5-10% improvement in render times. On one specific render test, the 2600k was actually 10% slower, though on another it was >20% faster.

As always, the law of diminishing returns applies. For a video pro doing a lot of rendering, a 5-10% boost might be well worth an extra $100.
