Speed Ramping with Footage shot on Sony 9000 HDcam SR 60fps progressive
Hi,
I’m about to start a drama documentary project with a range of footage – talking heads, GVs etc, but of most interest, slow motion footage shot on a Sony 9000 which shoots HDcam SR 60fps progressive.
This particular footage will be of people fighting. The director wants to speed ramp this footage.
The question he has asked me is, when considering speed ramping should he shoot slow mo in camera (60fps) or should he shoot regular speed (30fps). Does slow motion (60fps) footage look okay sped up? we will be speed ramping from very slow to very fast motion as we see our fights unfold.
Also, has anyone experienced any difficulties using mixed frame rates in the AVID previously. I’ve heard some bad reports.
Any help and comments are greatly appreciated.

Shoot slow motion in camera, 60fps looks fine sped up. Slowing down/speeding up 30fps in post adds all sorts of possible issues (Dup frames, poor frame blending). But I suppose it also depends on the look you’re going for with the fight. If you’re worried about frame rate problems, just conform your 60fps footage to 30p if that’s what everything else will be.

I should mention I’ve never shot 60fps on HDCAM SR, so forgive me. But 60fps on 5D Mark II, and Sony EX-1 both look fine sped up, I just checked them out in a project I have open.
